45th Regiment of Foot
« on: Wednesday 25 November 20 17:59 GMT (UK) »
Please could someone point me in the right direction.  I am searching for information on an Edward May who was born in Brighton, no dob.  He was in the 45th Regiment of Foot.  He was a Private and his number was 1433.  He had a son John May born in Dublin abt 1842, a daughter agnes born in Newport IOW in 1843 (mother Mary Ann Dixon) and another child Edward born in Brighton abt 1846 mother (Dixon).
Can anyone help me in finding out Edwards military information?  Any web sites etc.
Ancestry is down at the moment so I can't look on there yet.
I have found his info on Forces War which is where I got his regiment number.  Will I even be able to find info on him?
Thanks

The National Archives should have all the information you need.
You have his Army Number which is a great help.

I can add that in 1844 Jan. 19 until 1845 July 30, the 45th (Nottinghamshire - Sherwood Foresters) Regiment of Foot, were stationed in Gibraltar.

In 1881 the 45th Regiment of Foot amalgamated with 95th (Derbyshire) Regiment of Foot to form The Derbyshire Regiment (Sherwood Foresters).

It's a mine field, take time and patience.

The entry on Forces War Record is the 1841 World Wide Army Index - not the "normal" Census. The same is available on FindMyPast. It gives name, rank, regiment and place (Belfast).
How have you been able to link this record to your Edward May, born Brighton?

His occupation was given on Agnes's birth certificate.  She was born in IOW but her father comes from Brighton.  I did look on Find my past but couldn't fine info do you have the link please?
