John Dowd & Catherine Tansey

My great great grandparents are John Dowd born circa 1838 & Catherine Tansey circa 1851 from around Boyle, Roscommon. They married on 23rd November 1879 in Boyle, Roscommon. On the marriage certificate, John's father is listed as Patrick Dowd & Catherine Tansey's dad is listed as Thomas Tansy. They lived in Deerpark, Boyle Rural, Roscommon, Ireland and had 4 children; Patrick Dowd (born 1880), Mary Anne Dowd (1882-1945), My great grandmother Elizabeth Dowd (1885-c1972) and Kate/Catherine Dowd (1888-1977) who married a Lawrence O'Donnell.

John Dowd was a pensioner at both his marriage and on 1901 census - was he serving in the army?

Here's confirmation of his army service.......his death in 1909 at Deerpark. His informant, daughter Katie advises that he was a sergeant, late of the 14th Foot Regiment.
