Was there a Mill at Nether Chatto?
« on: Saturday 05 December 20 23:29 GMT (UK) »
Hello,  I am looking for help to find out whether or not there was a Corn or Grinding Mill located at Nether Chatto in or around the 1750s. I am aware that there was a Mill at Hounam Village in the 1790s but any information about Nether Chatto would be appreciated. I have found baptisms for some of my Ancestor's children in this area in 1750s. Thank you. Michael

Two mills Hownam and Heavyside across from each other. They would be 1 mile from Chatto.  Mills are typically identified on era maps.  https://maps.nls.uk/view/74400323

No idea what type of mill they were.  NAS only has a reference for Heavyside http://catalogue.nrscotland.gov.uk/nrsonlinecatalogue/welcome.aspx

Don

I have turned off all email notifications, thank you.

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

The answer is yes.

Look at https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=17&lat=55.45007&lon=-2.36518&layers=5&b=1 and you will see a Mill Lead (i.e. lade) clearly labelled.

Slide the blue button to the left, and zoom in. You will see a shadow of a building on the site of the mill. Whether it is the original mill building I can't say, but there are some photographs of (Nether) Chatto at https://www.geograph.org.uk/gridref/NT7717?centi=NT770175 of which this one https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2134488 shows most clearly the building in question, which is the one with the pile of plastic-wrapped bales at its right-hand end.

I am also unable to say for certain, of course, that the mill was there in the mid-18th century.

Thank you Forfarian. The map and photos have been very helpful. I think that you have resolved the question for me about the Mill existence.
