Hi

Having looked at the list that comes up birth entries on same page, it looks like all those on that page are on GRO as march 1883 on freebmd.

29 December 1882 was a Friday!  :-X
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

What I find odd is that if Blodwen was indeed born on the 29th (or very near) this is an unusually quick registration if they did it by the 31st. Imagine having a 2-day old baby and finding the time! This is why you're allowed a month.

I though you had 6 weeks to register a birth but someone with more knowledge of English practices will be able to correct or confirm the period.

It might depend on how close the child was born to the registry office or registrar. In Ireland at that period the Registry Office was in the local town but each sub-district had their own registrar (often the local doctor). It wasn't just the mother who might register the child- informant could have been the father or other relative, local midwife or neighbour.

The local Registrars records are held differently to the GRO who index them in the quarter they were submitted. Local records are indexed by the year of event, irrespective of when the registration was made.

Best wishes to all,

Lancashire BMD
Users' Guide to the Birth Indexes
From the indexes, you can find out
(b) The Year in which the birth was registered. Remember that the year relates to when the child was registered, and that a child born in December 1849 may not have been registered until January or February 1850, for example.

Thanks everybody,

Yes the records refer to the same birth. What I find odd is that if Blodwen was indeed born on the 29th (or very near) this is an unusually quick registration if they did it by the 31st. Imagine having a 2-day old baby and finding the time! This is why you're allowed a month.

Chris

I was born at 5pm on a Sunday and my dad was so excited he was at the register office first thing Monday morning to register my birth!

He was quite right to be excited at your arrival, Carol!
I was done after 4 days, I think to put a stop to my grandmother's suggestions to name me Pierre.

Perhaps those local BMD sites go different ways. Or individual districts do. Wiltshire BMD has exactly the same users guide, but I have found December births indexed on there in that same year even when they are in the next quarter's births in the GRO index (which is because they were registered in the Jan-March quarter of course !)
