Dixon family help please
« on: Saturday 12 December 20 17:25 GMT (UK) »
I am asking for help with the DIXON family.

William Bunting Dixon born 1840 Sheffield - son of Rev James Dixon
Married Elizabeth Aston in 1869 Wolverhampton.

I can see them on 1871 census and he is a chemist living Oxford Street Bilston
I have found two liquidation records one 1871 Wolverhampton and one 1874 Tondu Glamorgan.

They had a son Francis George Dixon born 1883

I cannot find them at all on the 1881 census and by 1891 and 1901 Elizabeth is living in Wolverhampton but it states she is a widow. Son Francis George is named as George.

I’m sure they must have had other children before Francis as they married in 1869 and he wasn’t born til 1883 but without the 1881 information I cannot confirm this. I also cannot find a death record for William Bunting Dixon.

Please can anyone help with finding this family on the 1881 census or help with finding a death for William?

Thank you

On the GRO index starting 1869 this is the first birth I can find with surname Dixon mmn Aston without entering a registration district.
William James  Dixon mmn ASTON
GRO Reference: 1878  March 1/4  in  Aston vol 6D  Page 350

Then these two

Francis George Dixon mmn Aston
GRO Reference: 1883  Dec 1/4 WOLVERHAMPTON  Vol 6B  Page 537

Thanks so much, I’ll see what I can find about those births. The family do seem to move around a lot which makes it more difficult to pin them down!

As I had seen a shipping record for a William Dixon going to Australia as a single man I thought I would take a look to see if one had gone after 1871 and there is this
Wm B Dixon
Nationality English, Occupation Gentleman
Arrival Age 30 birth date   about 1841

Arrival 26 Sep 1871 at Port Phillip Bay, Australia

Hi,

I think this is the burial for son William in 1880,

https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/199747794/william-james-dixon

and at the same cemetery in 1881 Alfred, the right age but no notation?

Wow, amazing as I have been hunting for ages and you have both found things so quickly!

Crisane, this is likely to be him. William Bunting Dixon went to Australia with his brother who remained there til his death. William returned and is mentioned in a book about his father Rev James Dixon so I know he attended his fathers funeral. He must have returned after this visit as his sons were born in the U.K. Maybe he went again and died there I wonder?

Daisypetal, that is also amazing work and it looks like these are certainly two children of this family. I am local to Merridale Cemetry and also able to access Wolverhampton records so I will be looking further into that. I can’t believe how quickly you both have found this information and am eternally grateful to you

Thanks Willsy I didn’t realise these records were online and I have a few relatives at Merridale so I’ll be able to look at these records now. I did have a look on the 1881 census using the information that they lived at Great Hampton Street when William James Dixon died but they’re not living there. There is also no Dixon’s family living in the Union Workhouse in 1881 so I’m still stumped as to where William and Elizabeth were at this time!

Thanks for this though as I had no idea you could access these on FS so I’m going to be busy having a trawl 😀

Don't know if you have searched this way but I usually have a look here first, you will need to set up an account to view the records

https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog

Pop in Wolverhampton and you will find a list to look at and then click on cemeteries, hope it helps
