Occupation from an 1850 birth certificate
« on: Saturday 19 December 20 20:10 GMT (UK) »
Wonder if anyone can help.  Trying to decipher a father's occupation listed on an 1850 birth certificate.  His son was born in Portsmouth so may be relevant to the occupation.  If I have his son's later marriage certificate (I'm not 100% certain it is his son's marriage) then at his marriage 23 years later his deceased father's occupation was "Engineer".  Best I've come up with is Thatcher but not convinced as don't think there would be much call for thatchers in Portsmouth in 1850.

I think it's Mariner - the first letter is very similar to the 'M' of Mother in the next box.
Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Bingley, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson

Welcome to RootsChat!

The family is a bit difficult to find post 1851 isn't it? (or maybe just my early morning eyesight...)

Interesting you say that.  I think I have found him in 1851, 61 & 71 although never with parents.  He would be my great, great grandad - if he is the right person.  He married in 1873 and wife was a widow in 1881 but I can find no record of death.  I think he joined the navy in 1868 (although his date of birth is wrong) and was on board ship in 1871.  He was a painter in 1873 and his daughter described him as house decorator at her wedding.  Doesn't therefore sound like he died in the navy (abroad and therefore not registered??) if he was a house decorator.

They are tough to follow!

I think you have the correct man re:birth cert.

He and sister Selina (GRO BIRTHS-MOODY, SELINA    mmn     TOWNSEND
1853  J Quarter in PORTSEA ISLAND UNION  Volume 02B  Page 357  )
pop up in 1861 with Fanny JONES(St Geo. E) as nephew and niece?

The sister Sarah Alice married (as Alice) William HAM and seems to be witness to the marriages of Sel*na and Thomas.

Kind regards,
Maureen

Thank you to those who helped with "Mariner". Why is it always so obvious afterwards - especially living in Portsmouth!

And thank you to Maureen.  How did you get the link with the the marriage to William Ham?

The sister Sarah Alice married (as Alice) William HAM and seems to be witness to the marriages of Sel*na and Thomas.

Sarah Alice wasn't with Thomas and Selina in 1861 and there was a death of a Sarah Moody in Portsmouth in 1852 and I assumed that might be her.  But now I think I have found mum and (Sarah) Alice in 1861 and 1871.  Still so many questions though - why no marriage between Thomas Moody and Alice Townsend - guess it could have been pre 1837.

Sorry - gone off topic to this Handwriting Thread.
