James GORRELL b.1797 in or near Enniskillen Ireland.
« on: Saturday 19 December 20 22:31 GMT (UK) »
James Gorrell born in or near Enniskillen 1797.
(He could have been born in Armagh County Tyrone Ireland.)

He migrated to Australia maybe on the clipper ship "South Carolina "

James Gorrell married Jane NOBLE 30 September 1857 in Dapto NSW. Australia.

James died 9th August 1877 at Kembla Grange NSW.

Does anyone know the whereabouts of the graves of James Gorrell's parents maybe near Enniskillen?
They were (I think) William Gorrell and Isabella Wylie.

Thank you for any suggestions and further history clues.

Armagh (city) is in County Armagh not County Tyrone.
Do you have an occupation for William Gorrell? If he was in the Army and stationed in Enniskillen when James was born then the family could have been from anywhere and it would be difficult to know where to search further.
Unfortunately the records you are looking for are long before the start of civil registration.
Any idea what religion the family would have been? James' birthdate is very early for records for most churches. Also, in the absence of death certificates a headstone might be the only record but not everyone had a headstone and lots of early ones are now illegible.

Thank you for your reply.

I understand that the whereabouts of graves was a difficult request
I think protestant was the religion.

There is little more of the story now come to light:
William Gorrell and John Gorrell were farmers of Roscor County Fermanagh recored in the freehold list of 1796-1802.

Roscoe/Rosscor is about 30 miles from Enniskillen.

This may be a strange coincidence or fact but in researching this family
a reference to  GORRELL
from newspaper Argus (Melbourne, Victoria:1848-1957 Thursday 28th June 1866 page 4.

On the 24th ult., at Grey River, New Zealand, killed accidentally, Edward Gorrell, fourth son of Mr Robert Gorrell, late of Rosscorr, County Tryrone, Ireland.
Home papers please copy.

Is this  perhaps a relative of James Gorrell as they came from the same area?

There are a couple of Gorrell families in Roscor in the 1901 census. Both were essentially Church of Ireland.  There were 2 Methodists but Methodism was not a separate denomination in Ireland prior to about 1818. (Before that they would have been Church of Ireland). So I’d guess that was your family’s denomination:

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Tyrone/Drumharvey/Roscor/1740565/

Roscor is in the parish of Magheracross. Their Church of Ireland baptism records start in 1800. So if your ancestor was born in 1797 there will be no record of that event, unless baptised 3 years late (which did happen).  Having said that, people didn’t celebrate birthdays in Ireland in the 1700s and 1800s and many didn’t know their age with any great accuracy. When officialdom asked for an age, or worse still, a date of birth, it was common just to guess or make something up. So it’s usually worth checking 5 years either side in church records.

Fortunately the Magheracross records have been transcribed and are on-line. There are some Gorrells from Roscor in the period 1800 – 1810 but I don’t see your James.  So it looks as though he was born pre 1800. In that case you are going to struggle to get a reliable date of birth for him.

If the family were farmers, they probably stayed put. So you might expect their graves to be in the Magheracross area. They might be buried elsewhere but I would start with Magheracross. According to the Ulster Historical Foundation website, there are 2 likely graveyards in that parish. One is Magheracross Church of Ireland (in the townland of Magheracross) and the other is Magheracross Old graveyard (townland of Bellanmallard).

Roscor isn’t very big by the way. It’s 251 acres of agricultural land. In 1901 there were 15 inhabited houses. Total population 47, all engaged in farming one way or another.
