Does the 1911 census say whether his wife is widowed or married?
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Maggie is down as Married on the 1911.

PS - but shown as head and a farm labourer

Do you know when and where any of the children married?  It might give an indication of whether Hugh was alive or deceased  at that time.

Hugh and Maggie had nine children! I have the marriage certificate for my great-grandfather (first born), but none of the others. Would I have to buy the marriage certificates just to get the information?

William John Fraser (my great-grandfather, 1897-1978), married Margaret Gibson 1920 in Kirkcolm, Hugh named as father and a labourer, so presume still alive at least.

Hugh Fraser (1899–1946), married Mary Bodle 1931 in Old Luce.

Robert Fraser (1900–?), married Elizabeth Nelson 1922 in Kirkmaiden.

Thomas Fraser (1901–?), married Helen Graham 1933 in Inch.

Maggie Fraser (1902–?)

Joseph Fraser (1904–1971)

Andrew Fraser (1905–?)

Jeannie Fraser (1907–1987)

Alexander Fraser (1909–?)

As a Christmas present, I've checked Hugh's marriage in 1931. His father is given as deceased by 1st Oct 1931.

If you send me your e-mail by PM, I'll send you a copy of the marriage entry.

PS - Maggie (as Margaret ) was still alive.

This was Maggie in 1953, photographed by her grand-daughter (my grandmother) Margaret.
