Birmingham trade directories
« on: Sunday 27 December 20 02:36 GMT (UK) »
further to a previous thread, Does anyone have access to Birmingham Trade Directories that cover the jewellery quarter please? I am trying to find out when Kenworthys jewellers of Ashton-Under-Lyne moved to Birmingham please. It may have been after WW2 possibly in 1950/60's. I'd also like to know if Thomas/Tom Kenworthy was the proprietor. They traded under the name of Kenart.
Thank you in anticipation
Jill Morris

Have you googled "Kenart" jewelers Birmingham?
You immediately get lots of hits for their jewelry. Lovely stuff!
I just looked at a couple, and they were hallmarked Birmingham in 1949, 1944 1939, and ebay says they were there 1934 to 1952 (somebody must have done some research).

Trade directories are on a University of Leicester website
specialcollections.le.ac.uk › digital › collection
You could try a search there.
Some on Ancestry too - maybe these don't go as late as you'd need.

Hi thanks for getting in touch, I've done all the basics, google etc, but it's not giving me any detail about the actual firm. Leicester Uni unfortunately doesn't have the directories for the dates I need, nor on any of the usual family history sites.
I've been in touch with Birm Lib, Jewellery federation- no reply, other places are closed at the moment. Hoping for someone local with some knowledge of area.
keep safe

Thanks for this, now I know what name they were trading under at that time. I'll see if I can find any more in the paper you mention.
best wishes, stay safe

Hi

Birmingham Family History Websites

Birmingham Local History Websites

It seems that they don't have Trade directories or Electoral Registers which cover the time span I'm interested in (1940-2001).

Edit: I searched on findmypast and the person I'm researching shows up three times, but with my account I c'ant look at the details.

Try this site

There are members who have Kelly's directories and trade journals and regularly answer queries about Birmingham companies especially those regarding jewellery quarter firms.

I'm fairly sure that there are no Birmingham Kelly's Directories after about 1974.
