Julia, while at least a couple of restorers on here use gimp, I wouldn't recommend it to start with. After using Photoshop Elements (PSE) for a while I tried out gimp and found it not very intuitive. PSE is much easier to use. I reckon for the cost of about a tank-full of fuel I'm having years of fun out of it.

Ah, interesting point Peter. None of them provide the added value of Rootschat tho!
