What happened to Ann Burton (nee Jaycock)
« on: Tuesday 05 January 21 09:27 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Can anybody see what happened to Ann Burton after her husband William died in Leicester in 1874?

They are on the 1871 census together with children Edward, William, James and Charles, with son Thomas living next door, living in Burleys Lane St Margarets in Leicester although I cannot ascertain what happened to her after 1874.

Ann Jaycock was born in Hinckley in 1825, where she lived with her husband William Burton before moving to Leicester.

I cannot find a suitable death or re-marriage record and would be grateful of any assistance.

Regards

TB

Have you found their youngest son Arthur in 1881 - shown as b Sheffield??

Was he their son?

Hi Carole

I think Arthur was actually their grandson - son of Thomas who was living next door.  His name features in both households and he is also shown as born in Sheffield in both (Thomas’ wife was from Yorkshire).

Ann is not buried with her husband - he is buried with unrelated people in Welford Road.

Thanks again for your interest.

Might she be the Hannah Burton born Hinckley who is 76 in 1901 on her own as a widow.

Death for a Hannah Burton in Jun 1904 Hinckley age 79 ties up with that lady but was she yours  :-\

Hi

Thanks for the response.

Unfortunately, Hannah Burton who died in 1904 is not Ann, as she was the wife of William’s brother Joseph.

Seems so strange that she should be so hard to find when records were becoming so readily available.

Is Ann the informant on William's certificate - could she have died before him?

Did any of Ann's offspring move to a different town? If so, she could maybe have gone to join them after being widowed.

Hi again.

The informant on Williams death certificate is Joseph Burton.  It is possible that Ann died before him although she appears on the 1871 census.

In terms of their children, she does not appear with sons Joseph, Edward, Thomas, and James.  Can’t be sure about Charles’ whereabouts after 1871.

Thanks for looking and responding.

The death for William Burton in Leicester Chronicle June 1874 just says 'on the 17th inst at the infirmary age 52.'
