Anyone know where Tonghill is?
« on: Wednesday 06 January 21 16:37 GMT (UK) »
According to the 1851 census, my 2xgreat-grandmother Mary Jane Stanley Rogers came from 'Tonghill, Ireland'. I've not been able to find any reference for this place or similar*. Can anyone shed any light on its whereabouts (or how it might be a mis-spelling of mis-transcription of a real place?)

Thank you! Julia

* except for one amazing little publication called 'Ireland's Lamentation. Being a Perfect, Full and True Account of the Scituation (sic), Nature, Consititution and Product of Ireland', written by an unhappy Protestant in James II's reign, which implies it might be in Tipperary.

Could it be Longhill? In both Donegal and Tyrone and there is also a Longhill Commons in Wicklow

Yes, that's right, they emigrated to Lancashire, and that's the last time my family had any Irish roots!
I rather like the Wicklow Longhill, being nearest to the East Coast. I need to know more about Irish emigration patterns, I guess.

Her husband John Rawlinson was a Minister in Manchester, his obituary in 1901 mentions a college mate 'Dr. Guinness Rogers' - I think Mary Jane's twin brother James. Other siblings born in Lancashire.

The Rogers family seems to be a large family, have you followed them through the censuses for places of birth?
