Whereabouts of 1st King's Liverpool Regt July 1916 ?
« on: Thursday 07 January 21 10:24 GMT (UK) »
Pte 10962 Henry Shepherd of 1st Btn King's Liverpool died of his wounds on 7 July 1916

What action would the Btn have been involved in presumably around the 1st July 1916?

Can't seem to find anything specific.

Sounds like the Somme offensive which started on the 1st. July.
I'll take a look at the war diary & confirm.
Back later.

The 1/KLR were involved in a raid on the German trenches on the 3rd. July
South of Givenchy.
He would have been one of the 30 wounded.
I'll get more detail later.

This is a link to the map:
https://maps.nls.uk/view/101464726
Below is a snip of the location & the Bde. order.
The 1 anomoly is that the map reference given in the
Bde. diary doesn't gel with the map.
I've marked the location (X) of the German trench being raided
but as you can see it is well behind the British front line.
The map is dated April 1916 so it may be in July the front line was further back.

OK I don't want to overwhelm you with maps but this one
is more accurate but still not bang on the date.
There is mention of launching the raid from Vincent St. sap
which I believe is above the X.
So at this location on the 3rd. was the German trench.

Absolutely Brilliant Jim!

The Family have visited his CWGC Headstone at Barlin Cemetery but have never known what action the 1st King's was in, where and when, that caused him to to be shot in action and eventually die of his wounds.

In a matter of a few hours you have solved an 104 year old mystery!

Thanks so much.

P.S.

Are those Casualties in the 1st King's on 3rd July = 1 Other Ranks Killed and 3 Other Ranks wounded or 30 ?

My mistake it's 3 wounded.
As an aside raiding was a bloody affair. It was a case of kill, capture
& get out quick.
These men had specialist training & would have gone out blacked up
& in balaclavas. Many had side arms but many preferred knives & clubs.
They would have crept out in the dead of night & under the barbed wire in
order to get as close to their objective as possible, all in dead silence of course.
It was then a case of rushing the trench & completing their mission.
Eventually the Germans got wind of it & he was probably wounded by shelling
rather than gunshot.
