Locating 'Woodside, Colinton' 1830's
« on: Friday 08 January 21 14:26 GMT (UK) »
I've come across an ancestors birth which advises she was born in Woodside, Colinton in 1829.

I've went through what feels like all of NLS OS Maps. I've searched ScotlandsPlaces and Canmore too.

I've only found a couple directories with it listed but that doesn't help much in actually pinpointing it on a map.

Any ideas or hints on how to track this down?

Have you looked at the 1841 census to see if your ancestor was still living in Colinton? If so, you can get a good idea of where it was by looking for other places listed in the same enumeration district and shown on the old maps.

Use https://freecen1.freecen.org.uk/cgi/search.pl because it allows you to scroll through from one household to the next.

I have heard of Woodhall, Woodhead and Woodville in the parish of Colinton but not Woodside.

I also tried https://scotlandsplaces.gov.uk/places without success.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Thanks for your reply.

I have got a note of the 1841 but unfortunately it doesn't give much more information. It states the family now live in the Village of Comiston - and looking at the OS Maps, there were only a couple houses where Comiston is listed. So I'm unsure..

I thought it may just be a place that local people would know until I found the directories but it does disappear from the directory after the 1840's.

Were there other siblings also born at 'Woodside' in the 1830s and after the 1841 census? If there is one close to the date of the 1841 census, it would be reasonable to suppose that Woodside was in or near Comiston.

I suspect so due to census information but there's no record of my ancestor taking them to get christened. The only records that contain 'Woodside' is my ancestors birth and death (she was only 3 or so).

Is the family you are looking at called Ranson? There is a reference here to Woodside and a James Ranson living there in 1834 www.oldscottish.com/colinton.html

Unfortunately, does not help you with location.

Wondering if the listing of the householders was done in order of location (as we would later call the 'enumerator's walk?).

There is only one entry for this address. Would make you think it was a single property rather than a collection of houses.

James Ranson, 35, Mary Ranson, 35 and Mary Manson , 15, are listed in Fordel in 1841 (from a transcription - need to view original to check for transcribers' errors.

See https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=16&lat=55.90479&lon=-3.23312&layers=5&b=1 for where Fordel is.

mmmfisher, trying to solve this one without all the information you have is like trying to wash the dishes with one hand tied behind your back.

What is the name of your ancestor and her parents, have you found any siblings, and if so what were their names and dates of baptism? Have you found the family in any census?
