Arthur William TAYLOR in ships crew lists?
« on: Sunday 10 January 21 12:47 GMT (UK) »
Arthur William TAYLOR of Harwood Island, Lower Clarence River NSW (born Arthur Button, Brighton, Sussex, England 18 Nov.1882 - but took the name of his stepfather William Henry Taylor), served as 3rd officer on the 3-masted sailing vessel Cassius in 1903 (from an item in the Clarence River Advocate 11 Dec 1903) and second mate on the barque Helen Denny in 1904. The Cassius seems to have been trading between Table Bay (Capetown) and Valparaiso (Chile) via Sydney; the Helen Denny mostly taking coal from Newcastle NSW to ports in New Zealand.

My question - is Arthur included in crew lists for any other ships?  I'm not even sure where to start looking. For example, his service on the Cassius is unlikely to have started before 1903 because the ship was only bought by its new owners (James Ritchie, Dundee) in that year - it was previously named the Kilmory (owned by Roberts, Glasgow).

He immigrated to the United States in 1907 where he married in 1911, naturalised in 1915, and lived the rest of his life, so I would not expect to find any crew list entries after 1910 at the latest.

An item in the Clarence and Richmond Examiner 27 Nov.1897 indicates that at that date he was still at school - as an entrant in an essay competition, and he was at home in January 1900, as a witness at his sister's wedding (named on her marriage certificate).

So the search is at least narrowed to a period from 1898 or more likely 1900, to 1910 at most.

Hi Ros - many thanks for the link. I thought there was a site like that (had visited it before some time ago) but had forgotten exactly where it was. Very helpful!

However, sadly have drawn a blank. I know he travelled from NSW to the US in 1907 but whether as crew or passenger I don't know - and I guess the likelihood is that the crew list or passenger list hasn't survived.

You can search the Ellis Island Immigration records to see if you can find his arrival in USA https://www.statueofliberty.org/ellis-island/

There is a May 1906 US petition for naturalisation for Arthur William Taylor, born Brighton England 18 Nov 1882, occupation deputy weighman, married to Alma.

It says he departed Sydney on Jan 1, 1905 on the Auchenllac (spelling?) and arrived New York 2 Mar (or May?) 1905

Hi Matthew - thanks, yes, that is the newspaper item that referred to his service on the Cassius. But that cannot have been his ship for the whole time he was away, as it changed ownership only in 1903.  http://www.clydeships.co.uk/view.php?official_number=&imo=&builder=&builder_eng=&year_built=&launch_after=&launch_before=&role=&propulsion=&category=&owner=&port=&flag=&disposal=&lost=&ref=19529&vessel=KILMORY

Brilliant - the immigration details. A year earlier than the census data suggested, but no matter, it's definitely the right person! Many thanks. This naturalisation application was presumably rejected, because he wasn't naturalised until 1915 - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33S7-9PQQ-SVZL?i=887&personaUrl=%2Fark%3A%2F61903%2F1%3A1%3AXKP3-PCR  - and he wasn't even married until 1911 - though to the same Alma, who by then had changed her name to Thelma. In 1906 she was only 16.

Actual departure date from Sydney was 8th Dec 1904 - which fits very well, as his last service record with the Helen Denny was 6th Dec 1904. Arrival new York 15th March - https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/158320980?searchTerm=auchenblae
Since the Auchenblae was a cargo ship, he was almost certainly a crew member, not a passenger.
