McCartans of Glassdrumman, Annalong
« on: Monday 11 January 21 17:10 GMT (UK) »
Hi Everyone

Looking for some help here - as have already gone on one wild goose chase and had the wrong branch of the McCartan family...

I have a John McCartan married Ellen Polin in 1904 (Marriage - https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1904/10188/5707127.pdf)

Here is Ellen and the Children in 1911

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Down/Mullartown/Glasdrumman/244490/

So all i know for sure is the John is from Glassdrumman, is a farmer and his father Arthur is dead, and that Ellen and John aren't together on the night of the census.

The above bits i am sure of, but not sure of what i have found since then...

I started searching the 1901 census for John and found
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Down/Mullarton/Glasdrumman/1235249/ but initially ruled him but the more i look at the the more it seems right...

In 1911 - there is a John Living alone aged 64, but now married - http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Down/Mullartown/Glasdrumman/244494/, so this fits with Ellen not living with her husband (Although they do have another child in 1912).

Looking into this a bit a more - traced the land via valuation revision books  (plot 41, Glasdrumman), and it passes from an Arthur, to Ann in 1885, and then to John in 1888..so this all fits... (Have attached the page of these books)

Arthur dies on 15 Sept 1883 with daughter Eliza McGreavy Present (Eliza married Richard McGreavy and i am able to trace this family)

Ann, of Glasdrumman dies in 1887, son John present at death (Place listed as Brockagh...or similar - have attached the death cert to see if anyone can make it out? - it appears as if a daughter was initially listed and then scored out - and i can't make her name out - Mary

Ellen dies aged 44 in 1915 and John dies aged 73, in 1917 as as widow.

So am i trying to make things fit, or does this sound right?

Anyone able to help shed anymore light on this.

If the above is right - Arthur has at least 2 children - Eliza and John and his wife is Ann (possibly Higgins?? - a search of Ros Davies, shows a John born to Arthur McCartan and Ann Higgins). Anyone able to help find any more children, or Arthur & Ann's wedding?

Think John's place of residence was Bracknagh (sic) townland. Look at the death record of the person above.

Also east, east upper and west upper.

Glasdrumman townland.

Townland on the death certificate looks to be Brackenagh (about a mile west of Glasdrumman).

Probate abstracts for the Polin family, taken from the PRONI wills site:

Polland Ellen of Glasdrumman Annalong county Down widow died 3 September 1913 Administration Belfast 25 September to Edward Polland farmer. Effects £1 14s.

Polin James of Glasdrumman county Down farmer died 4 November 1925 Probate Belfast 18 June to John Rodgers farmer. Effects £71.

Poland Margaret of Glasdrumman Annalong county Down widow died 9 May 1921 Administration Belfast 26 February to John Poland farmer. Effects £16 15s.

Poland, otherwise Polland William James of Glasdrumman Annalong county Down stone cutter died 22 September 1960 at Ballaghanery Glasdrumman Annalong county Down Administration Belfast 29 November to Elizabeth Poland the widow. Effects £724 8s. 4d.

3 died intestate so there won’t be a will but James left a will and that should be in PRONI. With the others the file should list their assets and indicate what next of kin there were.

Didn’t see any wills for McCartan from Glasdrumman.

Thanks for your help

I had already looked through the wills - but had probably missed some - so will hvae to recheck when i get back to the Poland/Polin side.

I have been looking through the census at Brackenagh and there is a few McCartans in the area anyway - but its a very common name, so not an easy search.

The 1911 census only shows where a person was on one particular night so it's entirely possible that Ellen and the children were just staying at her mother's that night. The fact that Ellen and John had another child in 1912 would seem to indicate they were still together after the census.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Register entry for John in July 1848 (right page, 3rd entry down):
https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000633175#page/36/mode/1up

I'm reading that as:
20 Baptd John McArten of Arthur + Anne Higgins
Glassdrummond Spons Richard Magreevy + Susanna Roney

I wondered if Richard was related to the one you mentioned - but there again, hardly an uncommon name for the area...

Looks like John had an older brother Arthur (top of right page):
https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000633175#page/14/mode/1up

26th Sept 1843
Baptd Arthur McCarten of Arthur + Ann Higgins
(Glassdrummond) Spons Bernd Burns + Susan McCartan

Thanks gaffy

The Richard, may be connected to the Richard I mention, possibly his father,  as it as a very common name, in the area, and this wouldn't be "my" line regardless.

I am wondering if anyone can help me get anymore information on Arthur (as found by gaffy) as i can't seem to trace him at all after his birth..

He may have died or emigrated, especially as younger brother John seems to be the one who inherits..
