Detention Home, 1911
« on: Friday 15 January 21 17:20 GMT (UK) »
In the 1911 census, Henry De Beaufre Joy (in Maidstone) has his occupation listed as "Master of Detention Home - Reforming Juvenile Criminals".

I wondered if anybody might be able to suggest which "Detention Home" this might be or anywhere I might look for further information?

The first Borstal Prison for juvenile offenders was opened in Borstal, Kent in 1902. Borstal is about 9 miles from Maidstone, possibly too far to travel daily at that time.

Looking at the Kent Archives catalogue, there were children in detention at Tonbridge House, Maidstone.

There is one entry on G**gle books showing Tonbridge House was in Tonbridge Road, Maidstone.
