Edith Mary Coomber(Cocks)
« on: Sunday 17 January 21 16:46 GMT (UK) »
Edith Mary is my maternal grandmother. Born 18/11/1890 in Devonport. Her birth certificate shows her parents as Charles Cocks and Elizabeth Ann Cocks (previously Coomber). Elizabeth had three children before Edith with her husband Jethro Coomber and is shown on her wedding certificate as Elizabeth Ann Cocks. Edith had three children out of wedlock and is showing living with her brother and grandmother in ',91, '01' and '11 census.
I've found a marriage of Edith Mary Coomber to John Donoghue in Nov1920 but the her age is given as 1896 and her father as Frank Coomber, a deceased Naval Pensioner.
On the face of it this isn't my grandmother, but I can't find a birth at the right time or a naval record for a Frank, except one born in 1881 making him a very young father.
Any thoughts would be appreciated

Jethro Coomber married Elizabeth Ann Cocks Dec qtr 1882 Stoke Damerel

Jethro was b 1858 Cuckfield Sussex according to the 1881 census & was a seaman.  He only died in 1918 in Sussex

Edith Mary Cocks (not Coomber) birth reg Dec qtr 1890 Stoke Damerel is on freebmd so she was illegitimate

Thank you. You wouldn't believe how much it cost to confirm those facts. He also died in the workhouse in Cuckfield. My real problem is whether Edith Mary Cocks is the Edith Mary Coomber who married John Donoghue claiming to be a spinster.

There is no Edith Mary Coomber birth in 1896

Looking at Edith Mary deaths in Devon with birthdate 18.11.1890 shows only one - surname Hopper death 1980

It tracks back to an Edith Mary Hernaman b Barnstaple

If she died before 1969 - full birthdate won't be on the death reg

This confirms my research. I've found nothing for Edith Mary Cocks after 1911. I'm pretty sure that her mother told a little white lie when registering the birth, reverting to her maiden name when Jethro Coomber left the family home.

No Donoghue births with mmn Coomber or Cocks up to 1930

How strange that Edith is shown as Cocks in 1891 but Jethro is in same household??

Did the Cocks grandparents have a son Charles?

By 1911 Elizabeth Ann married Joseph Edward Russell and became a farmer's wife.

Elizabeth Ann had an uncle called Charles born circa1863 in Camelford Cornwall
