I'm not saying it is, only that it might be.

I think it's the right item, but better to wait for GR2 for a transcription.

Many thanks for all your replies, and the clipping and transcription.

If you go back to the original clipping I posted, you can see that there are 2 very similar entries.
This one found for 1629 - John Cochrane in Strahaven , par of Evindall', is on the list 4 entries further down from the one 'John Cochrane parochinar of Strathavene II 46'.
It seems to me they would be 2 different people, or they would not be separately listed.
There were scores of Cochranes around Strathaven, many of them called John unfortunately!

So back to my original puzzle.
Does anybody have any clue to these 'folios' and Volumes, or is my best bet to contact NRS if and when they might be open again?

Thanks for all your time

The one that I found was an inventory and a testament combined. The date of the inventory is included in the text rather than a heading or marginal entry. I've not read the testament but it could be that that is not dated in this entry.

Just a thought but some of mine don't have separate dates.

It is basically what it says.  If an entry is in Volume 2, folio 5 it will be found on page 5 of volume 2

To find an entry you would normally just go to the book with the right covering date and find it in the volume using the index date as they were recorded in date order.  So if no registration dates were recorded in volume 2, the page number is needed to find it.
