Elizabeth/Eliza Lockwood
« on: Monday 18 January 21 18:52 GMT (UK) »
My 3xGGM was born in Oakley Essex c1805. She married Thomas Fellingham from Suffolk and moved there.  I am looking for her parents.

Would be grateful for any tips.  I have many lockwoods on my tree, all from Suffolk
Thank you

Can you be a little more specific? There is Little Oakley and Great  Oakley, close in proximity but two separate parishes.

She is not showing up in either parish.
CHOULES All ,  COKER Harwich Essex & Rochester Kent
COLE Gt. Oakley, & Lt. Oakley, Essex.
DUNCAN Kent
EVERITT Colchester,  Dovercourt & Harwich Essex
GULLIVER/GULLOFER Fifehead Magdalen Dorset

KING Sturminster Newton, Dorset. MONK Odiham Ham.
SCOTT Wrabness, Essex
WILKINS Stour Provost, Dorset.
WICKHAM All in North Essex.
WICKHAM Medway Towns, Kent from 1880
WICKHAM, Ipswich, Suffolk.

Thank you for your replies. I am not sure if it is Little or Great Oakley.  It seems to be the wrong location if nothing can be found in those parishes about her.

Another mystery  to be solved

Thanks to all who responded to my query

The name LOCKWOOD doesn't appear in the parish records at all for either Little or Great Oakley.

There are several things that you need to consider.

1) Either Eliza/Elizabeth may have lived briefly in one or other of those places as a child, it was quite common for people to name as their birth place the earliest place they remember living.

2)  Could she been married previously, if so then Lockwood would have been her married name not her birth name.

3) Was she illegitimate so born under another name, if her mother then married a Lockwood Eliza could have taken her stepfather's name.

If it was the second or third option, she may have been born in either LO or GO, but it would mean searching both parishes for an Eliza/Elizabeth Baptised around that time, then researching them until you can eliminate them.

She was single at marriage and mmn of children born post 1837 is Lockwood.

can't find an obvious burial or alternative marriage for the Elizabeth in L Stambridge.
There is a burial for a Sarah Lockwood the year after Elizabeth's baptism, but doesn't give age to know whether it is likely to be her mother.

A William Lockwood of south Benfleet married a Mary Brand in Marks Tey (not too far from Oakley) in 1808 by licence, then had a child baptised in South Benfleet (SB is close to G and L Stambridges). Is this Elizabeth's father remarrying and starting second family? Record doesn't give status. wit B Lockwood and John H Lockwood - all signed

Could the family then have moved to Oakley while Elizabeth was still too young to know where she was actually born as suggested in option 1 by Jebber.

Forget that last one, it looks like that William was the one bapt in Marks Tey 30 Nov 1785 s/o Bernard and Rachel and buried in South Benfleet on 26 May 1832 age 46. He would be too young to have married Sarah Davey at Witham on 03 Nov 1794, which was my best candidate for Elizabeth's parents so far.
