Fry Road, Luton
« on: Friday 22 January 21 12:17 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone know where Fry Road in Luton might have been. It doesn't appear to exist now and I can't find it on any old maps either so am a bit stumped.

For context
A 1913 workshouse record shows my grandmother Olive Carver and my great grandmother Hannah and gives my great aunt Annie under address of friends column thus

Daughter Miss A Carver 69 Fry Road (Husbd an inmate)

Annie, according to family story, lived with her great aunt Frances Burrows at this time. However the Burrows' address in 1911 and on electoral roll from 1914 is Avondale Rd.

Thanks
Jan

Might Fry Road actually be Ivy Road? Avondale Road is near by and looks like it was created after Kenilworth Road stadium was created in 1905.

For what it's worth, the only newspaper reference I could find to 69 Ivy Road was the following. I couldn't find anything for Fry Road.

Luton Times and Advertiser
22 May 1903
page 4, column 4
Ivy Road, Dunstable Road, Luton
- 6 neat brick and slated freehold dwelling houses
- with outbuildings, gardens,
- &c, at rear and centre passages to road,
- situate Nos 59, 61, 63, 65, 76 and 69, Ivy Road, Luton
- producing £100 2s per annum, to be sold by auction by H Holyoak & Son
- at George Hotel, Luton, on Tues May 26th 1903

Thank you cuffie, I think you've cracked it.
It still looks like Fry to me but the F doesn't look like the other capital Fs, can't find an I for comparison.

Thanks again

As an aside, have you seen the newspaper report in 1905 of Robert and Annie Carver, being charged with neglect of their children?

Yes I've got several newspaper reports thanks and found the children in the workhouse whilst their parents were in prison. My poor Gran had a tough childhood.

William Ansell's wife, Lois Elizabeth, looks to have been born in Lilley, Herts., the same place as Annie/Hannah Carver.

Might there be some connection?
