Hi there - I need some help!
I know my great grandmother had a child out of wedlock in February 1882 in Cork. I have found a civil record which I think is her child. The address given is 37 Peacock Lane. I have done a search and have found that there was a Magdalene Laundry in Peacock Lane in Cork. Does anyone know if the address corresponds to a Magdalene Laundry? Was it operating in 1882?
I am unsure whether this is her child - as the father's name is correct on the civil record (his profession isn't) and the mother's Christian and maiden name corresponds to my great, great grandmother's. I suspect her mother might have claimed the child was hers - but why put the address of a Magdalene Laundry (if it is one?) Also the civil record is from September 1882 but the parish record is from February 1882 - and both parents are correct on this record (but they were not married and there is no mention of the child being born out of wedlock - even though she definitely was.)
They married in April 1882 in England. So - could the civil record be who I think it is? I can't find any other civil record for the child.
Any ideas and help gratefully received!
Liz
