John Argue of Solina Ontario
« on: Saturday 23 January 21 22:13 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for information on John Argue who was born about 1807 in County Cavan Ireland. I'm trying to find out what year he came to Durham County in Canada and what year he married. He must have been single when he  came because he married Mary Stevens daughter of David Stevens and Mary Burk of Darlington Township. Mary was born in Canada. They farmed at Solina in Durham County and their first born Ira Richard was born in 1833 so they were probably married between 1830 and 1833.

You likely have some of this...

Argue John who died in 1808-1874 lays Perry's Burying Ground a small cemetery associated with Mount Vernon Episcopal Church. http://www.geneofun.on.ca/cems/ON/ONDUR10417?PHPSESSID=9b91db7adfeb4657872a1c61dab1c9e8

The Tyler's who lay there are my lot (maternal). Rev Jared Tyler a maternal GGG Grandfather married Mary's sister Permelia.

No idea when Argue arrived or married but there were two families.  One included a female who was born early 1780's and I believe she was in one of earlier census.  For Census https://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/census/Pages/census.aspx Argue has been incorrectly transcribed on some but if type ARG* they will pop up.

Marriage records don't exist. Sir Sandford Fleming College in Peterborough had some Episcopalian Records when they were a University, but when they changed to a College these may have been given to the Provincial Archives.

Durham OGS https://www.durham.ogs.on.ca/ has a lot on Darlington and the early families. They can also help you find land the records which might give you and idea when they arrived. Land Records are also available through the Province (Archives of Ontario), but with COVID I suspect limited services.

Clarington Library in Bowmanville have the old newspapers online and other material https://vitacollections.ca/claringtonnews/search
.

FIND A GRAVE has a little more information - included are the children.

Seems Ira Richard Argue was born 26 May 1833    Durham, Grey County, Ontario as you said in your original post.

Picking up from a previous thread that the family were on census in 1821 Ireland - must have immigrated between 1821 - 1833.  Sadly there are very few passenger lists around for that time frame.

Hi,

That is very early to find a marriage record...you would have to look in the District Registers.  I think the one that covers Darlington, Durham is the Newcastle District.   However, when I looked at the index (free here), I don't see an Argue

http://globalgenealogy.com/countries/canada/ontario/general/resources/258008.htm

They could have been married in a neighbouring district.  You can check some other indexes.

In addition to the Bownmanville library, you could also check the Oshawa Library.  I know they have a lot of genealogy records.

There is a book called "A Place Called Solina" .... Perhaps your ancestors would be mentioned, with further information.  The book is available at the Oshawa Library (I didn't check Bowmanville).  Local history books can be very useful sources of early information.

Thanks to all and I will follow up with your suggestions as best as I can. I did read the booklet called 'A Place Called Solina' many years ago but I don't remember a mention of John.
There were many Argue's from Co. Cavan who came to Canada many settling in what is now Stittsville near Ottawa. They were I believe probably cousins of John and they came around 1821. But if John came with them he would have likely stayed in that area.
