Ribbeson in Pembrokeshire
« on: Sunday 24 January 21 05:29 GMT (UK) »
Greetings,
My G-G-Grandfather Stephen Warlow was recorded in the 1851 Census as living in Bedwelty, Monmouthshire.   I have attached a snip of the record.   His place of birth is written as Pembroke, Ribbeson as best as I can read it.   I have been unable to locate any place named Ribbeson and the best that I can come up with is that it might be Robeston.
Has anyone heard of Ribbeson in Pembrokeshire and do you think that I might be on the right track with Robeston?
Thanks in advance,
Mark,
Canberra, Australia

The Parish baptismal registers for Robeston Wathen and Robeston West are on FindMyPast - but cannot spot a Stephen Warlow.
A Stephen Warlow married a Mary Lloyd, 13 Jun 1833, Spittal, Pembrokeshire. Both are "of this Parish". This would fit Mary, noting her brother George ('51 Census) was born Newcastle Pembrokeshire (probably Little Newcastle) - 'tho struggling with Mary's PoB in '51.
Stephen, of course, may be there under the 3 weeks banns requirement but I did note a "Rinaston" in the area. How badly mangled is "Ribberson"?

possible baptism in Little Newcastle 5 Aug 1799 for George son of Thomas & Sarah Lloyd.

There's a baptism in Llangwm 4 May 1806 for Mary daughter of Thomas & Sarah Lloyd.
Not that I can see a likely match for the census entry.

Does Mary die later that year?
Death reg Mary Warlow 45 dec qtr 1851 Abergavenny vol 26 pg 26

Possible remarriage for Stephen Wardlow march qtr 1852 Abergavenny vol 11a pg 121. If that is him, the marriage record would give name & occupation of his father.

another possible for the place of birth is Robleston in the parish of Camrose.

http://www.rootschat.com/links/01q8s/

and there are Warlows in the area. In particular, William & Sarah Warlow having children baptised
Ann 22 April 1810
Martha 14 March 1813
Thomas 23 April 1815
William 5 April 1818
Sarah 8 June 1823

William Warlow married Sarah Mabe 4 June 1807 in Camrose, the witnesses were James Thomas & Stephen Mabe.

There's a bit of a gap between the marriage and the baptism of Ann, possibly room for a Stephen baptised in a church whose registers aren't online?

To All,
Wow, thanks for all the replies and the pointers.   So there is a couple of place names that may fit for "Ribbeson".   Now to explore what church records are available.
Mary Warlow (nee Lloyd) did die in Oct-Dec 1851 and Stephen then married the widow Rachel Gould (nee Edwards) in Feb 1852.   Later in 1852 the migrated to South Australia with their children from both previous marriages.   In Oct 1853 they were living in Melbourne, Victoria when my G-Grandmother was born.
Cheers,
Mark

There are 2 Robestons to check, and they're not next to each other.

Robeston Wathen

Robeston West
https://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/PEM/RobestonWest

If you don't have it, I would suggest getting a copy of the 1852 marriage certificate from the GRO to confirm father's name & occupation. I suspect there isn't a parish record for that one, it isn't on any of the main sites.
