Copying OFHS CDs
« on: Sunday 24 January 21 17:31 GMT (UK) »
I have a number of OFHS parish transcripts on CD.  I’m in the process of changing my PC  and won’t have a CD drive.  I want to copy each of the CDs onto my hard drive and assume that I just copy the contents of each CD to an individual folder - am I correct?

I know most of the data is available on Ancestry, but I still occasionally use the PR transcripts as some of the Ancestry indexing is rather “creative “

It depends how the CDs are formatted, but presuming they are just collections of files then yes, copying them onto separate folders on a hard drive should work.

I presume that the hard drive is external to your current PC?

Another suggestion is to purchase an USB External Cd Drive, costing around £20.00 or less. This will enable You to still view any Media CDs, on the New PC.

I have several of OFHS' CDs, including parish registers and MIs, and none have any copy protection so the files can simply be copied to hard drive. But I can't say for sure all of OFHS' CDs can be copied so you might want to ask them for a definitive answer.

I have CDs from other family history societies that will only run from the CD, due to copy protection, so I use an external CD reader for those.

Thanks for the answers, when I’ve got a chance I’ll try copying them (study is having a new carpet today - so PC not working)

It is a good idea to copy CDs to hard drive anyway as some CDs can deteriorate over time and make the data unreadable. It happened to me with a CD I had from another FHS.
