« on: Thursday 28 January 21 11:20 GMT (UK) »
Hi does anyone know what the ticks down the right had side are in the margin? This is a taken from the 1851 census. They're not in any specific column...
Langley, Broughton, Taylor, Broad, Cooper, Owen, Bennion, Yorke, Knox, Norcup, Holland, Brookes, White, Davies, Huntbach, Bowler, Barnett.

They will possibly be what the enumerator did for their own use when doing their summary or similar.  Is that page for somewhere in Lancashire and he is marking those born in other Counties

Do the people whose names are ticked have anything in common eg born out of the county? Alternatively the marks could just be made by clerks when counting or compiling information.

At first glance it would look like its those born out of county, but flicking back through the pages its not always the case. Its the person with the bottom tick I am looking at, Thomas White. The place looks like ?? Ireland, but I am not convinced.
Hes a tricky one to trace. I think he's actually William White as all the other details line up. Family names, dates, occupation and there doesnt seem to be a william white recorded at the time.
In 1841 census it says be was born in the county, 1851 it says " for the above Lancashire and then Yeeland (Yealand?) which has been transcribed as Ireland.

Yealand Conyers or Yealand Redmayne.
Both just north of Carnforth.

Yes I think so. Been trying to see if any where near by looks like the place of birth for Thomas (William)

The tick is a standard mark for tallying those born out of county.

For the benefit of others, there's a previous thread on this, with suggestions ...

Thanks bookbox. Its been an ongoing issue trying to trace Williams origins. Doesn't help with White being a common name!
