Army regiments stationed in Tipperary
« on: Saturday 30 January 21 12:15 GMT (UK) »
All,
I have a soldier ancestor who fathered two children in Tipperary in 1832 and 1834, according to later UK censuses.
Does anyone know which regiments were stationed in the town during that period? I am struggling to find his army record, and this information would be a great help.
All assistance much appreciated!

Clonmel possibly more likely than Tipperary town at that time? What name are you looking for?

Hi Shaun,
Thanks for the quick reply.
The census records just say Tipperary, but I guess that could mean County Tipperary.
My ggggf's name was William Piper, b1792, d1850, in Clifton, Bristol. Various documents indicate that he reached the rank of drill sergeant at the end of his service...although I haven't been able to find his army record, hence the question.
His wife was Mary Ann Piper, and his two Irish-born children Thomas, b ca 1834, and Mary Jane, b ca 1832.

Just checked out later censuses - Mary Jane’s 1901 record indicates she was born in Templemore, which I guess means her father was stationed at McCan barracks.

Mary Jane’s 1901 record indicates she was born in Templemore

and Thomas Piper born at Templemore circa 1835 served in the 19th Foot 1852-1863 (number 2765).

Is William the french polisher in Clifton in the 1841 census? If so have you found the baptisms of the other children ?

I am wondering if he was in the North Gloucester Militia. There are newspaper reports in January/February 1833 that they were to be embodied and sent to Ireland.

I have a birth at Templemore in 1833 and it appears on FindMyPast in the

Gro Regimental Birth Indices (1761 To 1924)

So was able to order a certificate.

But I don’t see any Piper at Templemore.
