McDonald & McLeish links to Grandmother from Dundonald
Hello I am trying to find information on the following: my Grandmother AGNES MARY MCDONALD her Mother AGNES MCLEISH/MCLISH/MCCLISH.
My Grandmother Agnes McDonald at age 6, estimated birth 1894, lived in Ayrshire, in the Village of Dundonald. Her Mother Agnes McCleish listed as a Laundress and Head of the household aged 29 yrs estimated birth was abt 1872. Her parents were James McLish and Elizabeth Calderwood. This information is from the 1891 and 1901 Scottish Census, Parish of Dundonald, ED:1 Page 21, Line:1 Roll No: CSSCT1901_223. Registration No 590/1 Household 102, The Census was taken on the night of 31st March/1st April 1901. Agnes McCleish was an unwed Mother, the father may have been known in the Village as she gave the child her fathers name. The Father is listed as Neil McDonald Farm Servant High Newton Darval. There are no further records for Agnes or her Mother after 1901 Census I am unable to find what happened to them or find further information on Neil McDonald. Thank you Lyn Burley.

Hi Lyn,
Welcome to Rootschat.

There was a Neil McDonald born in the parish of Loudoun (of which Darvel and areas of the town of Newmilns belonged to ) on 22nd Aug 1874 - he was the son of Neil McDonald and Mary Steven.
I believe this boy is recorded on the 1891 Census at
Muirhouse Farm in the parish of Loudoun ( the farm sits between Newmilns and Moscow *)
He is 16 years old and a farm servant.

* Moscow (pronounced Moss- cow ,as in the farm animal ) is a small hamlet and the Volga burn (stream)  runs through it

Looby :)

Welcome from me too  :)

Have you considered that Agnes Snr may have married after the 1901 census in Dondonald? There is this marriage entry:

Agnes MCCLEISH and William ROLLO
1902
Ref 590/1 6
Dundonald

Maybe her death entry on SP:

Agnes MCCLEISH or ROLLO
Age 79
1951
405/1 23
Auchterderran

If the marriage in 1902 is for the correct Agnes, there looks to have been at least 2 children from the marriage. Two deaths showing with mother's maiden name given as MCCLIESH or MCCLEISH. Both deaths in Auchterderran. The 1911 census entry would let you see if there more children by then:

William Rollo, age 81, died 1984
Helen McCleish Rollo, age 81, died 1985

One more child for Agnes Snr I think. Her 1891 census entry at home in Dundonald:

James McLeish 47
Margaret N McLeish 21
Agnes McLeish 19
Marion B McLeish 8
Elizabeth McLeish 8 Months grandchild

I think baby Elizabeth might her her. See www.oldscottish.com/sheriff-court-paternity-decrees-marchbanks-mcdonald.html

Agnes MCCLIESH in Dundonald

Child's birth 17 Jul 1890 Dundonald

Regarding the Neil McDonald that Looby has mentioned. He is back home with his family in Loudon by 1901 and is working as a Lace Factory Engineman. If he remained in Ayrshire, there is a marriage in 1907 at Newmilns for a Neil McDonald and a Marion Pirrie.

Regarding your grandmother Agnes Jnr, what happened in her later years? Did she not marry your grandfather?
