Mary Absolent (possibly Macdonald) born mid-1860 St Pancras
« on: Friday 05 February 21 05:43 GMT (UK) »
Seeking sources for Mary Absolent (possibly Macdonald) born mid-1860's St Pancras, that pre-date her 1885 marriage.

My sources begin with her 1885 marriage (indexed as Mary Absolent and Mary Absoleut).

15 November 1885 Holborn, London, marriage source image shows groom Thomas Frederick William Lewis Hastings, age 22, Bachelor, occupation Stationer, father Henry Hastings with no occupation.  Bride Mary Absolent, age 21, Spinster, father is John Absolent with occupation Carpenter.  Bride's residence 37 Rising Hills Street, Clerkenwell, London.  Witnesses Frederick William Abbott and Jessie Maude Cook.

I found her husband's early sources.  He was born Thomas Frederick William Stride.  Orphaned at a young age, he was taken in by a (drunken) workhouse couple named Hastings.

I'm thinking Mary Absolent may have also had a workhouse background, possibly with (informal) adoption.

I could find no sources for someone who could be her (bio, adopted, step) father John Absolent, occupation Carpenter.

Since she gave her own maiden name as Macdonald for her middle child, I'm wondering if she was formerly known as Macdonald before being taken in by John Absolent, or if that was actually her mother's maiden name.  Either way, I could find no sources.

Post-1885 sources I've found [I purchased birth/marriage/death images from GRO]:
1886 Shoreditch birth of son Thomas Frederick Valentine Hastings, mmn Absolent
1887 West Ham birth of son Herbert Henry Hastings shows mmn Macdonald (not Absolent)
1891 Census on City Road, St Luke, London, with husband and two sons as above
1891 Holborn birth of daughter Edith Harriet Sarah Hastings, mmn Absolent
1901 Census Walthamstow, Essex, with three children as above plus Hastings mother-in-law
1911 Census Tottenham, Middlesex, shows Mary Hastings bore 3 children, 3 alive.  (Proves Mary Absolent = Mary Macdonald).
1939 Register in Leeds, Yorkshire, in the household of her married daughter Edith Harriet Sarah Murgatroyd
1951 Death in Leeds, Yorkshire.

Her age varies in her sources.
1885 marriage = age 21 (born 1864)
1891 Census = 1865 England
1901 Census = 1866 St Pancras, London
1911 Census = 1865 London St Pancras, London
1939 Register = 16 February 1867
1951 Death = 1864

I've been banging my head on this for more than a year.
Can anyone please help me find sources for her, before the 1885 marriage?

On those birth certificates, who is the informant giving the MMN?

Sorry Mckha489 - You beat me to it!

Absolent and it's varients are ususual names.   I searched on the surname on FreeBMD in the time frame and came up with one reault - the marriage of Charlotte Absolent age 20 to Harry Martin  on
24 Nov 1873 at  St Thomas, Bethnal Green,  Charlotte's father is listed as John Absolent a Wood Cutter

I found a baptism for a  Charlotte Absalent on 3 Apr 1853 at Charterhouse St Thomas with parents John and Sarah with John listed as a Wood Cutter

Looking at family trees on Anc I found a few trees that appear to be the same family although the surname is listed as Absolom??  :-\  In these trees John's wife is listed as Sarah Macdonald and the couple married in 1853 with John listed as a fine wood cutter

At the moment I can't see the family post the 1861 census below - If you have access this is the tree I referred to on Anc https://www.ancestry.co.uk/family-tree/person/tree/155505604/person/182050377123/facts

1861 Islington
John Absolom 39 Wood Cutter
Sarah Absolom  35
Jane Absolom13
Charlotte Absolom 5
John Absolom 5
