Burial in 1913 eglwys Mynachlog Pontrhydfendigaid
« on: Friday 05 February 21 11:18 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I have just seen a death notice in a welsh newspaper online for John Osborne Morris  buried in the above cemetery in 1913. I don't know which church to look up as it doesn't come up in any search I have made.his mother was born in Cardiganshire and I am guessing that is the reason he was buried there as he was living in London at the time of his death.
A name for the church would be great please.
Kind regards
Nerys

Hi Nerys

I think it's the church at Strata Florida abbey; there's small church with a large churchyard just adjacent to the ruins. I saw this on Twitter (not sure if the link will work) https://twitter.com/ystradfflur

The farmhouse at Strata Florida is Mynachlog Fawr although the church itself is St Mary's and Pontrhydfendigaid is the nearest village.

I've just done a quick search on FindMyPast and it confirms Strata Florida as the burial place.

Hi,
Thank you for the link, it certainly works and I found it very interesting. I can now see if I can find the cemetery in the findagrave website to see if John Osborne Morris had a headstone.
Best wishes

It being such a beautiful day (for a change) so I went and had a look. A massive burial ground of about 4 acres. Burials are roughly in chronological order but I couldn't find a single Morris never mind John Osborn. A lot of spaces and a few fallen stones. According to a notice board te local poor used to bury their dead unofficially at night which might explain some of the dog legs in the rows You could try writing to the vicar, they may have a burial register but I did notice that there are no plot markers or row numbers so wouldn't be easy to find unless they have a plot map. If you find out more I'll happily have a look for you.

Thank you so much for your time in looking for the headstone of John O. Morris. I appreciate that very much. Given what you have informed me, I don't think there will be any hope of a headstone. I will get in touch with the vicar, there may be a record of him there in a pauper's grave. I wondered why he would be buried there as his parents are buried in Glamorganshire!
Kind Regards

Is it where his Mum came from do you think? You said she was born in Cardiganshire
