Isabel or Elisabeth?
« on: Monday 08 February 21 17:19 GMT (UK) »
Has anyone come across these names being interchangeable?
I'm trying to sort out my Trevis/Trevise ancestors from Little Rowsley. John Trevis who died in 1710, had a wife called Elizabeth so named on the Probate administration papers. I can't find a relevant marriage for him.
He had 6 children (I think)
Mary 1685
Elizabeth 1688
Elizabeth 1691
Isabel 1695
Henry 1700
John (bapt not traced)

In the admin papers Elizabeth is charged with bringing up Isabel. Henry and John, because they are under the age of majority.
Her signature is witnessed by Caleb Stubbing who is married to Mary Trevis (marriage 1710). So far so good!
I had thought that Elizabeth died and was buried in 1721 (PRs show her as daughter of Isabell Trevise) I now think this was  sister Elizabeth
There is a will of  Isabel Trevis of Calow in 1728.
In this will she leaves bequests to her daughter Mary (wife of Caleb Stubbing), Sons John and Henry, and names Caleb and Isaac Cowley as Executors, described as sons in law.  (Isaac Cowley of Brampton married Isabel Trevis at S Wingfield in1726). The name on the will is clearly Isabell!
Does my theory hold water or am I clutching at straws?
I welcome any comments - I have checked original documentation where possible!!
Sorry for the long post. :)

Yes! I have come across this in Scotland and I also believe in NE England.

My go to site re first names is called whatsinaname. It is excellent on issues like this and on pet names.

In the days when we could travel I went to the Perth (Scotland) archives and the archivist there assured me Isabel & Elizabeth were interchangeable.

Similar thing for me too, also in Scotland.  Robert Livingston's wife is Isabel Cockburn/Coburne.  Named as Issobell in his Testament.  Her Testament in 1688: Elizabeth, relict of Mr Robert Livingstoune of Libertoune."

I am pleased to have this confirmed.

Thank you all! I am now happy that they are the same person. Now to see if I can find Elisabeth/Isabel marriage/birth details, although I suspect she will be hidden from me!
