Would anyone know what the male occupation "Labourer G.L" means ? in the 1911 England Census ?The writing is very clear. Next to it is says "worker"

Thankyou

It wouldn’t be General Labourer would it? It doesn’t make much sense doubling up the word “labourer” though ...  :-\

I’m sure someone will know the answer.  ;)

Difficult to say without seeing it and without the geographical context. Could be "general" as has been suggested, or perhaps a short form of G L & CC - the Gas Light and Coke Company.

Jane, as Shaun says, context is everything. Could you give the person's details please so that we can take a look at the original?

Having looked at the image, I would agree with an abbreviation for General and not G L.
