Van Diemen's Land
« on: Friday 12 February 21 15:38 GMT (UK) »
John Potter b.1820 Liverpool

Recently I have found that my 2nd GG Uncle was transported to Van Diemen's Land Land for Stealing plate I think this is lead.

I have found a number of records for him but I cannot find if he went home or if he died in Van Diemen's Land.

Australian Convict Transportation Registers - Other Fleets & Ships, 1791-1868

John Potter
in the Australian Convict Transportation Registers - Other Fleets & Ships, 1791-1868

Name:   John Potter b.1820
Vessel:   Blenheim
Convicted Date:   4 Jul 1836
Voyage Date:   11 Mar 1837
Colony:   Tasmania (Van Diemen's Land)
Place of Conviction:   Lancaster, Lancashire, England

He was transported on the Blenheim.

I have a copy of his behaviour record that states he was released by servitude on the 4th Jul 1850

I have a copy of his Criminal Petitions

But as I said I cant find if he left Van Diemen's Land and if he did not where did her end up did he get married and have children and where and when did he die.

Here is a link to some of the info I have found on John

Any help would be of great use

Kind Regards
Tom

He and James Bains stole "a quantity of plate, the property of H James Ames". I think "plate" in this context is probably silver or pewter tableware.

Thanks Shaun that makes more sense than lead. From what I have read he said he never done it but was found with some of the booty on him so receiving stolen goods, but I dont suppose I will ever know.

Kind Regards
Tom

Could I direct you to the Founders and Survivors (Tasmania ships ) website where several hundred convicts have been researched. I was part of this research program and the task was to ascertain among other things what happened to the men after being freed. The research was assiduous and thoroughly checked.
Think you use Google you should be able to find it. My gut feeling is he went to Victoria for the Gold Rush in 1851
