Michelborne alias Mascall
« on: Saturday 13 February 21 09:55 GMT (UK) »
Hi All,
Did not know where to put this message so I thought would try here.
I am researching the Maskell Family and have found out that the surname came from the subject name, however I am now stuck, I have traced the family backwards to a Walter Mascall (b23 Mar 1579 to 1641) from Mayfield, East Sussex, and was married to Rose Aynscombe (1582-1619), however that is as far as I can go, there is no trace of family after that.  I have traced the Maskell/Mascall family from the Northeast/Howden, Yorkshire through from me to Richard Mascall (b1520) from Howden, Yorkshire married to Margaret Payne
Now I know the two should merge somewhere as I have been informed, however I am completely stuck now, can anyone help please?
Thanks
Phil

Why do you believe the 2 families are connected?
You've done well to get as far back as 1520 but this is the start of Parish registers so
unless they are nobility you're unlikely to find any more.
Many of the early registers were on loose leaf & many were lost.

Sorry forgot to mention, but on the Joan Attwood side married to Thomas Michelborne you can go right back to early 1050's!

Have you researched this yourself or are you relying on online trees  :-\

Lots of possible trails to follow.

There is a pedigree of Mascall of Sussex, showing Walter, in Berry's Sussex Genealogies p 328:

https://theweald.org/d10.asp?BookId=WBS901

You do need to be wary - these are not always completely accurate.  There is also one for Michelborne in the same book on p 50.

The Michelbournes adopted the name of Mascall in 1522 when they settled at Mascalls in Lindfield.

I suggest you look at Comber's Sussex Genealogies - Ardingley Centre, which is available on Google Books.  You might find something useful in that.  Again, check what you find - it is not completely error free.

Good luck.

Nell

Thanks also to "Litttle Nell", again have already got that info through the link I have already posted, you can search for either michelborne or mascall in the top right hand search box and then when you select which book you want you can search again in the box on the left hand search box

Thanks again for helping
