Commonwealth War Graves Commission are appealing for relatives of Pvt George Devine - Army Veterinary Corps - service no SE/11972 - died 4/3/1917.  Buried Stoak (St Lawrence) Churchyard.

The private memorial marking the grave of Pvt Devine no longer provides adequate commemoration. The commission is in the process of producing a headstone to mark his grave.

From find a grave - Casualty of the Great War, George served with the Army Veterinary Corps No. 2 Reserve Vet. Hosp. Service No: SE/11972. He was 32 and the son of Mr. and Mrs. Devine; husband of Bertha Agnes Devine, of The Rake, Little Stanney, Chester. Born at Guilden Sutton.

He was born on the 6th November 1884 in Guilden Sutton and was baptised on 15th February 1885.  He had 3 sisters Jessie, Alice, May and 3 brothers Lawrence Jnr, John and Arthur.  He went to the Guilden Sutton Church of England school. 

 

He married Bertha on the 15th February 1916

 

George died in the stables at Longmoor Camp and a inquest was held a verdict of 'death from natural causes' was given.  But it was said he was kicked to death by a horse  :'(

Bertha Agnes doesn't appear to have re-married.  Death registration in June quarter 1961 - Wirral - aged 87.
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.
Remember - "They'll be found when they want to be found" !!!
