'Boultons' 1750-1800 Bishop Transcripts
« on: Saturday 13 February 21 14:53 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I have a single reference to an ancestor (Henry Boulton) who hailed from Radnorshire. I have been unable to find any baptism record for him or his brother Thomas.

I understand that the Bishop Transcripts will be held in the See of Hereford. Is that correct? If the parish records are not yet online where are they likely to be held?

If they were baptised outside the established church what is a good reference for identifying dissenting congregations that existed at that time?

Thank you for any advice or pointers.

Welcome to Rootschat!  ;D

Could you give us a time frame for this please?

Where do you have him on the census or in parish records?

It would depend on which parish the records are for. You can check on Genuki for the records
https://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/RAD/indexpars
e.g
https://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/RAD/Knighton#ChurchRecords
Knighton BTs are held at Hereford with copies at Powys Archives
or Nantmel
https://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/RAD/Nantmel#ChurchRecords
held at Powys & the NLW.

Dear Osprey,

Henry died before census records in 1817. I have parish records for his children (St Mary Magdelen Bermondsey between 1788 and 1802). I have a record for brother for a second marriage in 1797 in St Martin-in-the-Fields.

I have a letter dated 1810 where Henry states he is a native of Radnorshire. Thanks for confirming there may be records in Hereford, Llandrindod and Aberystwyth. When lock down lifts I will look into making a jouney there to see what I can find.

regards,

Glenn

Without a parish to work from that's going to be difficult.

The only Boulton I can see around the right time is Mary Boulton of Llanfihangel Nant Melan who married William Hodall of New Radnor 16 Aug 1779. Burial in Radnor 11 March 1831 for Mary Hoddell 73 of New Radnor, burial 30 Nov 1827 of William Hoddell 70.

No Boulton wills or marriage bonds in the area.

best of luck!

But it shows there was a Henry around in the same area.

There's also Boulter and Bolter in the same area,
I suppose it was pretty difficult to transcribe records from that early.

that baptism may be Boulter.  :-\
Marriage 19 Dec 1778 in Llanbadarn fawr, Radnorshire for Henry Boulter & Ann Davies, witnesses Jeremiah Boulter & David Jones, all signed.
Burial in Llanbadarn Fawr 11 Sept 1839 of Henry Boulter aged 84 of Llansaintfraed

Possible baptism for the Mary who married William Hodall
4 April 1744 in Llanfihangel Nant Melan for Mary daughter of Robert Boulter & Margaret his wife.

At least it eliminates some records.

Thank you osprey and wilcoxon.

Henry Boulter born circa 1755, married 1778 and died 1839 would have been a contemporary of my Henry so not a member of his immediate family. But maybe a cousin if Boulter and Boulton are interchangeable names.

Mary Hodall nee Boulton norn circa 1758, married 1779 died 1831 is promising as a sister (I suspect the Mary Boulter born circa 1744 is a different person).

Ann Boulton born circa 1784 daughter of Henry and Ann is interesting but my Henry's wife's name was Alice and they had a daughter named Ann born 1797.

There is a marriage of a Henry Boulton and Alice Smith 1786 in Herefordshire BT see https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:7JTF-ZPPZ but no idea what parish this record relates to.

regards,

Glenn
