TROOPSHIPS
« on: Sunday 28 August 05 13:04 BST (UK) »
In 1956 I was on a Troopship bound for the Far East via the Suez Canal. We got as far as Malta when the Suez Conflict commenced and the Ship had to return to UK. I can't remember the name of the Ship. Anyone know please?
All ended well, had a couple of weeks leave and continued journey on P and O Liner 'Himalaya'. Slightly more comfortable.

Thanks Annie. A very interesting Site. Didn't solve my problem, but provided some more links that could help.

Hi again Annie,
That Site is a beauty, posted a message in the Guest Book. Maybe it will jog someone's memory. They have a Picture Gallery of Troopships. I still couldn't remember the name. That's ageing I suppose,
Bob.

The great probability is that the ship was either the Dilwara or the Duneera, sister ships that the Army used throughout the Korean and Malayan campaigns and even later. I was due to sail on the Dilwara in February 1957 back from Cyprus and the Suez campaign but I managed to burgle my way onto a plane. I had previously sailed, in 1953, on the Dilwara en route to Korea but got reposted to Malya on arrival at Singapore. 8)
