Ann Carr bc1838 ecclesfield
« on: Monday 15 February 21 00:40 GMT (UK) »
Trying to just finish up some dead ends here, before I finish writing up (on a roll of wallpaper 🤣) this family tree for my friend ...

I have Ann Carr who married jeremiah sorsby in 1855 in the Sheffield registration district.  She consistently gives ecclesfield as her place of birth on censuses 1861, 71 and 81 and 1839 as her year of birth.

England birth registration says fourth quarter 1838.

The only census I found in 1841 has her living aged 3 in ecclesfield with Jonathan Allen bc1781, Mary Housley bc1806 with george housley bc1829, Henry bc1833 and an apprentice John Sharr bc1826.

The GRO gives mother’s maiden names as hirst, allen or wike for Ann carr born 1838.

Only Allen is Dec quarter 1838. The other two are January quarter 1838.

So ... I think her mother’s maiden name is Allen. I think that Jonathan is probably her grandfather.

Can anyone see anything that proves this? I can’t find her baptism or her marriage entry (although the civil registration says 4th quarter 1855, Sheffield registration district, volume 9c page 453). The marriage entry in parish records would give me her father possibly, unless she was illegitimate of course.

Many thanks!

Modified.
I have just found a nonconformist baptism for two of Jonathan Allen’s children: Mary and Elizabeth ... baptised 1803 independent masborough, Rotherham.

In 1841 Jonathan Allen is a coal miner.

I have found this Marriage In Rotherham Minister on 21 Jan 1838:

Thomas Carr, Wheelwright, Bachelor ,from Bridgegate ,marries Harriet Allin , Spinster of Bridgegate. Thomas is son of John Carr, Labourer, Harriet is daughter of Jonathan Allin, Miner.

I'll keep looking for a baptism.

Thanks for all this ... it’s now thrown up another puzzle 🤣

Ann Carr is living with grandad Jonathan Allin in 1841 in Ecclesfield.

Also in the house is Mary Housley and her two boys. I’m assuming her aunt, but don’t have any proof of that yet.

Ann marries jeremiah Sorsby in 1855 with witnesses robert and Mary Housley.

Jeremiah’s mother is Sarah Housley b1808 Ecclesfield. She has a brother called george who was born 1813. Their father was Robert housley born c1778.

It seems there are quite a lot of links between the two families. Can anyone find a marriage for george and Mary?
