Bridgehouses

On looking through the Bishops Transcripts for Stannington, I came across Bridgehouses as the place a couple of my possible relations lived.  I have googled the name but all I have come up with is two bed and breakfast places, one at Hexham and one at Alnwick.  Can anyone shed any light on this place?

Stannington bridge is in the centre of the l-h map, so I would imagine that is where 'Bridgehouses' were situated.

I can't speak for the B & B at Alnwick, but I can assure you that the one at Hexham has a very good reputation    I drove past it only a couple of hours ago.

Hi JenB, thanks for that information.  Some places just sound so wrong, and I was even more baffled when I googled it.  Have only been to Stannington once, but never saw a bridge - but that proves nothing.  Hubby and me don't do B&B because of the dogs, and we actually live in Northumberland so used to go out regularly sightseeing.

As you can see from the map I linked to, Stannington Bridge was a little south of the village, and of course the old bridge over the River Blyth as been replaced by the A1.

There is still a house called Bridge House, it is a relatively modern bungalow (not sure when it was built). It stands reasonably close to the original Bridge House which disappeared when the A1 was improved and a new bridge was installed in the late 1980s. As part of the improvement to the A1, property and land were subject to compulsory purchase orders between Clifton and Stannington Bridge. Bridge House is mentioned under Schedule 1 of the proposed compulsory purchases. It also states that it was owned by the Hon. Viscount Ridley.

The bungalow is shown on Zoopla, last sold in December 2015 and I have attached an image of where it stands. I have also attached an image of the old bridge.

Hi AllanUK, thanks for that information.  The people in question worked at the mine owned by Lord Ridley, so that all fits in.

I have Stannington Davison forebears in 18thC and 19thC all with addresses Plessey, Bridgehouses and Shotton Edge. Assuming Plessey Hall Farm and Shotton, Stannington Bridge as the nearby site of Bridgehouses would make sense.
