James Hughes (?1840-1913) Adavoyle, Armagh
« on: Tuesday 16 February 21 15:03 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,
I'm in need of some help with more details on my GG Grandfather, James Hughes. I cannot confidently trace the line back further than him.

We know he came from Adavoyle (Aghadavoyle/Achadh an Dá Mhaoil).

I expect he is one or both of the James Hugheses listed in these censuses from 1901 and 1911.

He was also very likely the James Hughes who married Julia Susan Kelly (1854–1896) on Sept 29 1870.

One parish register from nearby Killeavy Lower lists a James Hughes, baptised 4 Mar 1840, son of a Patrick Hughes and Mary Gartlan.

Any insights would be appreciated!
Thank you,
M

I would suggest this website as a good place to start for Irish Genealogy:
https://www.irish-genealogy-toolkit.com/

You mentioned the townland:
https://www.townlands.ie/armagh/orior-upper/killevy-upper-orior-portion/aghadavoyle/
You can now check the tithe applotment for 1834-1835 in the parish:
http://www.irishgenealogyhub.com/armagh/tithe-applotments/killevy-parish.php
You can verify against the 1864 record:
http://www.irishgenealogyhub.com/armagh/griffiths-valuation/killevy-parish.php
You can then check the land revision records from 1865-1929:
https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/information-and-services/search-archives-online/valuation-revision-books

The James Hughes who died in 1912 did leave a will.
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1913/05346/4489356.pdf
You can find the will on PRONI:
https://apps.proni.gov.uk/WillsCalendar_IE/WillsSearch.aspx

The marriage record in 1870 does list his father was Patrick Hughes.
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1870/11391/8182540.pdf

Everything seems very consistent with your findings. I would suggest checking out the original tithe applotment records on PRONI and track the land until 1929; the will indicates that it goes to his son Patrick.

Hi, I am tracing my Hughes family ancestors from Armagh and would like to compare notes.  I think the James Hughes of Armagh mentioned could possibly be my 2GG.  I think that his father was Patrick.  The wife of James was Mary Cullen.  Their son, John, was my great grandfather.  (Other children include another John who passed as a child, Mary, Catherine, and Edward...). I am still sorting out the details but am hoping to connect with others who are researching the same family.
Best regards,

Does the marriage not list the name and occupation of her father?
