Need help from the US on Carl Gustav Hahm/ Gustav Hahm
« on: Wednesday 17 February 21 01:08 GMT (UK) »
Carl Gustav Hahm born 1873 in Germany arrived in Australia with his family, on board the Lammershagen. His Father Leopold Hahm and his Mother Wilhelmina Steinke and siblings.

I have found no trace of Gustav as he was known in Australia after 1921. He lived in Queensland.  I found a record below for a Gustav Hahm and I am hoping I can prove if this is the person I am researching.  Is there more information available on this record, like where he is coming from or a shipping record or family members?

There is a USA index card for a Gustav Hahm. (H 500) It states date of Naturalization 9 March 1925. Country of birth Germany and born 1875. It lists court district Illinois,Indiana,Wisconsin,Iowa.

There is a bit more information on him on the Australian site of Rootschat.

Thank you for any assistance you can provide me with.

Glenys

The other page of the index card said a prior petition was filed in 1920.  https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33SQ-GPQQ-8VRR?i=3110&personaUrl=%2Fark%3A%2F61903%2F1%3A1%3AXKG9-MXR  If he was in Australia in 1921, then it doesn't sound like it's him.

Thank you Shelly for your kind reply to my question.

Would that 1920 request mean that person was in America at that time?  Just trying to understand how the system works and I want to get it right.

Cheers  Glenys

I'm not sure what alienage claim means.  I've never seen that before.  Given the time frame, I'm wondering it had something to with WWI and being German-born.  Whatever it was, I doubt it would have been filed if he wasn't living in the US.

I suspect this is the Gustav who was living in Granton, Wisconsin as of the time of his naturalization.  https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/134590350/gustav-william-hahm  He was in the US as of the 1910 census.  https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MPKZ-6B5

Again, thank you Shelly for your reply.  Very much appreciated.  I am going to rule this person out and keep looking in Australia (which I have been doing forever).
