Eli Fogwell (Frogwell) b.1838, Southmoulton, Devon
« on: Thursday 18 February 21 15:12 GMT (UK) »
I’m following the family of Eli Fogwell (sometimes Frogwell) b.1838 Southmoulton, Devon.
•   1851 census Eli aged 13, with mother Mary Ann b.1807, and sisters Elizabeth and Eleanor.
•   1861 census Eli, aged 24 with mother Mary Ann (widowed)
•   1871 census Eli, 35 an inmate of Barnstaple Union workhouse
•   1881 census Eli, aged 43, now married to Elizabeth tog. with 3 children (Fred, Ellen and Earnest) and a William Danch (I believe this is his wife’s relative – ‘Darch’).
There is a marriage record for Elizabeth Darch JFM qtr 1869 Barnstaple vol 5b pg 797 to Eli Fogwell.

Following Elizabeth Darch’s life:
•   1841 aged 4, with parents William b. and Ann at Landkey, with sister Mary and brother William.  (listed as Durch)
•   1851 aged 14, with William and Ann at Swymbridge, with sisters, Mary 21, Susan 7 and Ann 5.
•   1861 aged 24, servant at household in Landkey, with Robert Boatfield 72, Emma Boatfield 30 and Robert Pethebridge.
•   1871 aged 29, lace mender in Swimbridge, unmarried daughter to William and Ann Darch, with 2 grandchildren.
•   1881 aged 40, married to Eli Fogwell, with 3 children (Fred, Ellen and Earnest) and William Danch (as above)

It is possible that if after Eli and Elizabeth married in 1869 they got into financial difficulty and Eli had to go to the workhouse, that Elizabeth may have gone back to live with her parents, but her age on the 1871 census (29) is out of sync and why is she listed as unmarried?

I would also be grateful for some information on Elizabeth’s parents William and Ann Darch.  I’m looking for a marriage just prior to eldest daughter Mary’s birthday 1830, which would hopefully give me Ann’s maiden name.  Thanks for reading and any help you can give.

Do you know when the youngest child was born?  If it was late 1837 or after you can look up the child's birth registration to find the mothers maiden name.

Thank you for marriage details and for Ely's family details.

I've been unable to see the births of the youngest Darch's on the GRO registration.  Ann b.1846 and Susan b.1844. Am I doing something wrong?

Thank you for sharing this. I also found another birth of an Elizabeth Darch born 27 July 1851 Swimbridge on an Ancestry tree. Maybe Jane and Elizabeth were twins?

Referring back to the 1871 census when I found Ely Fogwell in Barnstaple workhouse and Elizabeth living with her parents in Swimbridge.  The marriage record of Jan qtr 1869 Barnstaple surely must be the correct one for them, with their uncommon names. I’m trying to establish why Elizabeth refers to herself as unmarried on the 1871 census.  Shame about her situation (Eli in the workhouse) or is it simply an error by the original recorder?

The 27 July 1851 baptism (not birth) was at Landkey for an Eliza DARCH, dau of William & Ann of Swimbridge. If they were twins they would have been baptised at the same time I would have thought. There doesn't appear to be a birth registration for Eliza - so perhaps Eliza & Jane are one and the same with a name change. (pure speculation on my part)
