Father Madden Pastor of Roscommon Parish
« on: Monday 22 February 21 17:28 GMT (UK) »
Peter Duffy in his book the Killing of Major Denis Mahon writes of Father Madden, pastor of Roscommon  Parish in 1848. I am wondering if he is a relation to George Maddin father of Catherine Madden. Catherine Madden's two sons were baptised in 1848 and 1849 in Kiltevan, Roscommon. Catherine was baptized in Athleague daughter of George and Mary. Probably going nowhere, but I thought I'd ask as I can find no records for George.

I have not read the book but I can’t see  a Dungarvan parish in Roscommon.

I searched for the book with a Madden reference but there only seems to be a ‘Fr McDermott’.

There is a Dungarvan parish in Waterford though.

You could try looking for an obituary for Father Madden. Do you know his first name?

Thank you. I knew this was a long shot. I will look for a obit for Father Madden. The reference was specific about Roscommon.

I don't know how Dungarvan fits in, but a possibility has to be the Very Reverend John Madden, V.G. (of Elphin) and P.P., RC Pastor of the Parish of Roscommon (and Kilteevan).  When he died in 1853, an article in the Roscommon Journal and Western Impartial Reporter of 17 December said that he had 'been the beloved Pastor of this parish for upwards of thirty-three years'.  Which is borne out by a comment at the beginning of the following marriage register started in 1820 for the united parish of Roscommon and Kilteevan (left page below):

My apologies to all. I inadvertently wrote Dungarvan when I meant Roscommon. The information about Father Madden is most interesting as his Parish is where my ancestors were baptized. I look forward to learning more about him and still wonder if my Madden ancestors are related.
