Callan Workhouse
« on: Monday 22 February 21 20:32 GMT (UK) »
I have found a record of a death in the workhouse in 1916 which could be a relative.  The death was registered by an official so there are no family members named although it says he was married.  Are there any workhouse records available?  How could I identify him?

Does the death record give a residence - sometimes it states ‘from ....’ under the name.

If not, have you found a similarly named person in 1911 census?

KG, thanks.  I'll have a look when I can travel to Kilkenny.

heywood, no residence.  I have my relative's army records, marriage cert, birth certs of his two children, entry on 1911 census (aged 46) but no record after.  His army records show 4 different ages!

He's alive in 1914 when declared 'medically unfit when trying to re-enlist.

There are a few birth certs which could be him (same father's name as on marriage cert) but can't identify.

Need his birth certificate to go back further. Hoping death cert would help.

You could e-mail Kilkenny County Library HQ and ask for assistance. Scroll down for contact details-

If you link to his death record, we can assist you in finding a birth record.

KG, I'll do that.

We visited Kilkenny library some years ago and were given lots of info by a very enthusiastic gentleman.

Thanks for your help.

Just to add:
Was he living in the Callan area in 1911?
Does the occupation match?
Have you looked for wife’s death/children’s marriages - although as he died quite young, they might not help.
