Whittlesea - Gutridge / Guttridge / Gutteridge
« on: Friday 26 February 21 18:10 GMT (UK) »
Thomas Gutridge was born in Whittlesea round about June / July 1819 (worked out according to dates on his regimental papers)

I have searched everywhere I can think of, using each of the different ways of spelling the surname, but have had no luck.

I would really appreciate any assistance in finding his baptism / names of his parents.

Many thanks.

It's Whittlesey, Cambridgeshire,

Does he later wed?
What paternal info is at marriage?

There are a few Non-conformist baptisms of a similar surname.
Have you followed those through later records to be considered as siblings of your man?

He doesn't seem to appear on any census entry.  What is your connection to him?

There is an 1861 entry for a Henry Gutteridge b 1814 Wittlesea (note spelling).  A tree on Ancestry has his parents as Robert & Ann but makes no mention of a sibling named Thomas

Thanks for getting back to me.  He married a Mary - quite likely here in South Africa, as all his children were born here.  Unfortunately I have been unable to trace her maiden name, so no lead there.  He died in South Africa, but no parent names are on his death notice.

I did find a William Gutteridge (sp) married to an Ann in Whittlesey. (Sorry about the spelling of the town!)  Their children were born between 1815 and 1825, but no Thomas appears.  Looking at the traditional naming pattern - not one of his children had the name William or Ann either.

The only information I have on him (other than the South African info) comes from his regimental papers, so have nothing on any possible siblings at all.

Thanks Carole.  I also looked on the census records.  He signed up in January 1840, so I suspect he could have been out of the country by the time of the 1841 census.  His first child was born in 1845 in South Africa, so I suspect he was here with the 45th Regiment soon after joining up. He then married and resigned from the regiment in 1858. I am helping someone in South Africa trying to sort out her tree.

Very few Gutteridges with a birthplace Whittlesey and given the birthyear of the Henry Gutteridge I mentioned I wonder if there is a connection as he has a son Thomas.

However - FS also shows a William & Ann Gutteridge baptising children in Whittlesey around the same time

Thanks Carole.  I realize that finding Thomas is a bit like looking for a needle in a haystack - especially with all the alternative spellings of his surname.  Henry does seem like a possibility though, as the dates could mean that he was a sibling, and Thomas also named one of his sons Henry.  However that could be wishful thinking on my part!  I shall follow up on him though.

I am also hoping to find his army service record today - maybe that will throw more light on him.

Thank you so very much.  I know that Thomas named his 4th son Benjamin - perhaps after his brother?

This looks very promising, so shall be investigating them this morning.  Really appreciate your assistance.
