Handwriting queries in memoirs
« on: Sunday 28 February 21 13:38 GMT (UK) »
Hi all

My 2 x great grandmother was thankfully persuaded in 1930ish to write her memoirs. We have about 150 typed pages of amazing info! There are a few handwritten inserts and two in particular have us stumped.  I have attached two images with the unclear words underlined in red.

The full sentences are:
“He was educated at Stellenbosch and was beloved by the [unknown] students, Professor and Mrs Murray, Professor and Mrs Hofmeyr, and in fact everyone who new him.”

And “Thus was I irresistibly driven by fear of another tragedy to [unknown] with my Maker because I felt that my cup of sorrow was full to overflowing!”

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Could the first one be "medical" but written a little wrong.  The second one I read as "confirm".

I think the first is Meddical (with 2 d's), and the second is bargain.

I think the first one is Theological - and if so, the 'g' is the same as in bargain (for which I have no better suggestion).
Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Bingley, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson

Thanks all!

Theological was our first instinct but it didn’t look like a g. Comparing it with “bargain” however makes perfect sense.
