What does this abbreviation stand for?
« on: Monday 08 March 21 17:07 GMT (UK) »
Looking for help working out what this abbreviated term means in a catholic parish register marriage record of the 1850s.

I believe that the bride and groom may have been some degree of cousin, so I suspect it may have something to do with that, but I don't know what the specific meaning is. There is no noted dispensation recorded alongside, unlike the record underneath.

Thanks in advance!

The first part is:   3tio et 3tio = (ter)tio et (ter)tio = third and third

This is the form of the usual expression for degree of consanguinity, as you suggested.

That is, related in the third degree and third degree of consanguinity.

The second part looks like Eden, but I'm not familiar with its meaning in relation to consanguinity (or otherwise).

Thanks for the reply!

Eden is simply the name of the townland they were from, specifically Eden in Tamlaght O'Crilly.

So the couple were related to the third degree. If I remember correctly, that implies they shared a great grandparent, correct? I wonder why there was no dispensation listed. Usually in this record it is listed either with 'Disp' or 'Dispensed with...'. I suppose it's possible it was just omitted by accident.

Thank you again, this definitely helps me in working out just how entangled these two families were!
