Italian Red Cross nurse in WW1 Adele Porto
« on: Tuesday 09 March 21 21:47 GMT (UK) »
Hello, I have a little notebook which belonged to a Red Cross nurse called Adele Porto. I think she was Italian, and looking after wounded Italian soldiers during WW1, probably in Italy. I can't find her anywhere though. I don't know if Porto was a later married name either. Do you know how I can find an archive of Italian Red Cross nurses?
Many thanks

I am currently researching Adele Porto as part of a project for my local history society.
She died in 1970 and is buried in the Danehill Burial Ground in East Sussex.
I have other informaton if you are interested.
It is wonderful to see her diary.

Best wishes
Elizabeth

As far as I know she was Adelina/Adele Porto. I think she met Richard Bertram Ling in Italy during WW1 as Richard served there in the Medical Corps 1916-1919.
She came to England and had a son Ricardo, in 1921 but although I cannot find a marriage record she is listed in registers in 1930 as Porto and in 1933 as Ling. She was a lanuage teacher and was awarded the Freedom of the City of London. For what I do not know, I'm still researching that.
She also had a daughter, Mary Stella, in 1926 who was an artist and sculptress.

Hi Garstonite,
I am fairly sure that they were married in Italy on 10th April 1920.
She died as Adelina Ling on 24th December 1970, in London I believe (buried in Danehill).

Hi Simsam
That clears up the mystery why I cannot find a marriage in UK.
Any other info will be very useful. She is indeed buried in Danehill, East Sussex.
Many thanks,
Elizabeth
