Is this ‘my’ Thomas Jones?
« on: Wednesday 10 March 21 08:52 GMT (UK) »
My ancestor Thomas Jones was born circa 1812 (give it take 2 years either side!) in Nant y Flint, Holywell parish. He was married twice, once to Margaret Hughes in 1838 at Bagillt and again to Sarah Owens in 1850 at Bagillt. Both marriage certificates give his father’s details as Thomas Jones, a farmer.

In 1841, I have Thomas Jones Jr living in Nant with his wife Margaret and baby daughter Elizabeth. There is an elderly Thomas Jones who I’m considering may be his father. If I’m right, Thomas Jones Sr was born circa 1761 in Flintshire. He was a pauper by this time as he was 80 years old. I decided to buy a death certificate for the man I suspect may be Thomas Jones Sr in the hopes that maybe my Thomas Jones Jr registered his father’s death. He died 5 August 1845 but his death was registered by John Parry, his nephew, of Nant y Flint.

So not only am I no closer to solving the mystery but I now have a John Parry to look into! I’m absolutely baffled. But for starters, do you think I have the right man for Thomas Jones Sr?

Apart from the fact he lived nearby, what else makes you think Thomas Jones (1761-1845) is the father of your Thomas Jones Jr? Have you a baptism for Thomas Jr?

There are two John Parry's living in Nant in 1841. One is a stone mason and the other a smelter. Both worth looking into.

Have you a baptism for Thomas Jr?

I've checked the Holywell baptisms but none around that date with a father named Thomas, farmer. Neither  marriages say if Thomas snr is dead.

Added - non-conformist records have a Thomas son of Thomas and Jane. Born 9th Feb 1810 of Gronant, Llanasa. bpt 11th Feb at Newmarket. No occupation given. Don't think that this fits birthplace though!

Have you followed up the Mary Jones, aged 70 on the 1841, listed in the same household as Thomas Jones, Snr.?

A different Thomas Jones I think, Gadget. I think they mean Thomas Jones, aged 80, on the next page. He's living alone. ;D There's so many!

Are you sure as the one is a farmer and  with Mary and John Parry is living next door to Thomas, jnr.

I'll go look again but that was why I picked that family.

I did an address search and went through all the Nant y Flint addresses.

Apologies for the confusion!

1841, Nant y Flint
Thomas Jones, 27, Lead Miner
Margaret, 30
Elizabeth 2

That is Thomas Jones Jr.

Next page has a
Thomas Jones,80,  pauper

This is the man I purchased the death certificate for. The death was registered by John Parry, his nephew, of Nant.

Just wondering if the Thomas Jones, farmer, living next household, is more likely to be Thomas jnr's father.
