Salford Maps pre 1950
« on: Wednesday 10 March 21 16:15 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I have looked and looked but cannot find any.

I am looking for Salford Maps that show house numbers in streets, I have seen them somewhere  >:(

Hoping one of our maps experts can help.

You could try the maps at National Library of Scotland:

https://maps.nls.uk/os/  (this is the OS maps series link)

I can't see the house numbers on them, but the individual houses are very clear.

The earliest Ordnance Survey plans showing house numbers were the 1:1250 scale (about 50 inches to one mile) produced after WW2.

Harry.
Ballingall, Donaldson, Fulton, Gillespie, Ramsay, Walker - in Fife.
Bury - in Salford & Liverpool.
Jack - in Glasgow, Dunfermline & Dundee.
Bermingham/Birmingham - in Cork.
Eagle - in Norfolk, Edinburgh & Glasgow.

Perhaps?

The 1954 one seems to have street numbers or is that too late for you?

These are the best early maps of Central Manchester and Salford but no street numbers - https://luna.manchester.ac.uk/luna/servlet/view/search?q=five%20feet&sort=reference_number%2Ctitle&os=0&pgs=50&cic=maps002%7E1%7E1

A big thank you to all of you for your input

I knew I was not going mad saying maps with house numbers  ;D

Henry7 & Ruskie hit the nail on the head and now I have identified the house I was looking for, but looking at a normal map the house was on another street.

Don't know if I can show this map to explain. I was looking for 46 Back Roman Road, Salford and without the number plan it was not there in any year map. It was just another house on Carter Street.

Cheers
Ken

Now gone, sadly:
 :(
Yep typical but as least it is pinpointed. I was doing this for a cousin who I reconnected too a couple of weeks ago, last time we spoke face to face was 45 years ago in Africa.
So when he asked I had to try and find the location of his mums house and fellow rootschat were up to the job again.

Regards

The shame with this area is that the whole lot looks to have been "redeveloped". Sometimes you can be lucky - if houses in neighbouring streets look the same on the plan and are still standing you can have a look at them and get some idea what your house used to look like.  :-\
